Doing What It Takes

Equipment pass out.

What a past few weeks it has been! We came off the STEAM Carnival, moved into a new building (for 1 day), and then everyone was sent home to work remotely during the COVID lockdown. All that said, school has continued forward, and work doesn’t stop!

To assist our staff members in their roles of supporting schools, I decided to adjust my role and do what it takes to keep work moving. I set up a form that our folks could submit a request to get their equipment needs met and started walking around the ESC (by myself per the guidelines) and collecting their items. This ranged from monitor, phone, cables, etc. to this particular folder, book, and stack of papers. We scheduled pick up times, and I marched it out to their cars to ensure that they could keep working.

There are times when you might need to drop your title, position, or job description expectations and focus on that very bottom bullet that says, “Other duties as assigned.” Even though this was not an assigned duty, it was one that I chose to assign myself because I knew it was the right thing to help our staff and schools. I didn’t miss meetings or conference calls, but I did roll up my sleeves and did whatever it took to make it happen.

Christmas Came Early

Well…we are still wrapping the present so it will not likely be ready until the spring.

The ESC has purchased and is in full speed build-mode to get the new facility updated and ready to move into. I had the opportunity to catch a glimpse and some photos of the construction taking place. Plans are to have my division move over into the new location, and we were given the opportunity to assist in the design and buildout of the space. This is a great learning experience and chance to see something go from concept to implementation from a construction lens.

The facility will look to house our entire department with a true operations center to monitor FIBER11, support calls, and a higher level of customer support. Watching the entire organization outgrow a facility that we moved into only 5 years prior is exciting. Great things are happening at the ESC!

FCC Trip #2

FCC Selfie with Dr. Steelman

And…we are back in Washington D.C. again! Just under a year later, my executive director and I had the opportunity to once again visit the FCC at our nation’s capital to talk about the benefits of the work our team had done with our FIBER11 project.

I won’t go into too much detail here. All I can say is that I was super proud to be here the first time, and the second trip only validated the work that we had done to get to this point. The program continues to expand each and every funding year and more and more students are served in locations that were once thought to be non-economical when looking exclusively at the ROI. I know the return that we are getting by giving students access to online tools, virtual field trips, and other resources that were once not possible due to bandwidth limitations.

Needless to say…we made it happen!
